Real space mission

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe will be the first-ever mission to “touch” the Sun. The spacecraft, about the size of a small car, will travel directly into the Sun’s atmosphere about 4 million miles from the surface.

Westerlund 1

This is Westerlund 1, one of the largest open clusters of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Open Clusters are stars that all formed at about the same time, all of which are about the same distance from Earth, most likely formed from a single dense molecular cloud which in this case has now dissipated due to the flaring up of so many stars.

Most people consider mushrooms to be the small, ugly cousins of the plant kingdom, but theirs is surprisingly beautiful and wonderful world waiting to be explored. These beautiful mushrooms, captured by enthusiastic nature photographers, are a far cry from the ones you find in the woods or your local grocery store.

Most mushrooms, as we know them, are actually just the reproductive structure of the fungus they belong to – their fungal networks expand far further underground, and some fungi don’t even sprout the sort of mushrooms that we’re used to seeing. In fact, depending on your definition of “organism,” the largest living organism in the world is a fungus – there’s a honey mushroom colony in Oregon that occupies about 2,000 acres of land! Continuing with these week’s bryophyte (s.l.!) theme, here are some fun British acrocarpous mosses. (Acrocarps are erect species in which the female sex organs, the archegonia, are terminal rather than on lateral branches.) The British Isles might be somewhat lacking in interest when it comes to higher plants, but thanks to our plentiful supply of Atlantic rainwater, our bryoflora is really quite rich- over half of Europe’s species occur here.

Sunspots are dark regions on the solar surface that contain complex arrangements of strong localized magnetic fields and are often accompanied by intense solar activity (such as solar flares, coronal mass ejections), especially during the solar maximum. The dark central region of a sunspot is called the umbra. It contains nearly vertically oriented magnetic flux tubes, which suppress the convective heat transfer. These magnetic flux tubes emerge to the solar surface at the activity belt (±30◦ latitude) and form bipolar sunspot pairs. Due to the energy deficit the inner part of the sunspot is about 1,500 degrees cooler than the surrounding quiet Sun, therefore it appears darker against the hotter and brighter background. The semi-dark outer section of the sunspot – the penumbra is surprisingly complex. It contains bright and dark filamentary structures with varying magnetic field inclinations. The inclination of the magnetic field plays a significant role in the formation of radial plasma currents, known as the Evershed flow. In the presence of increasing magnetic inclination the granular cells become elongated magnetoconvective rolls.
